Ask Jules… about banana’s.

I have always heard that I should eat a banana after a workout. Is it for more than muscle cramps?

-Ed

Hi Ed!

Yes, bananas are a great post, and pre, workout choice. They have potassium (so do avocados, spinach, yogurt, potatoes, beans…) that you need enough of to help with muscle contraction (among other things) and without enough potassium you can expereince muscle cramps. However, if you are low in potassium overall in your diet, it may or may not make a difference to have a dose of it right after your workout; I would suggest aiming to get foods with potassium throughout the day so you may come into any activity fully prepared!

And also yes, bananas are helpful for more than just potassium; they are a quick to digest carbohydrate source, providing you with necessary glucose for during your activity and or to replace stored glucose (glycogen) post workout for best recovery. If you like bananas, by all means work them into your meals and snacks before and after physical activity.
